The Black-headed Python (Aspidites melanocephalus) is a striking, non-venomous python native to the arid and tropical regions of northern Australia. It is well known for its glossy jet-black head, which contrasts beautifully with its cream, tan, and dark brown banded body.
Adults typically grow between 2 and 2.5 meters (6.5–8 feet) in length, although exceptionally large individuals can exceed 3 meters (10 feet). Despite their impressive size, they are generally calm and are highly regarded by experienced reptile keepers for their inquisitive nature and attractive appearance.
One of the most unique features of this species is its heat-absorbing black head. The dark coloration helps the snake warm up quickly after spending time underground, allowing it to become active sooner during cool mornings.
